Code Veronica & Resident Evil Zero Are So Close to Greatness
As the 30th anniversary year of Resident Evil nears its halfway point, social media has seen its fair share of debates over what the best titles in the franchise are and whether the remakes are fitting tributes or even replacements for the originals. But the best litmus test for whether remakes of really good games that have aged well can really ever be needed are the two least talked about titles in the series: Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica. These two titles are full of big ideas and boast a lot of firsts for the series, but also a lot of lasts – two controllable characters, outrageous side characters, huge maps, extremely tough enemies, etc. And there’s a good reason for it: a lot of these ambitious ideas were extremely unfair, frustrating, or tedious in their execution. And yet they’re so bold and sometimes fantastically fun that it would be a shame to leave these aspects in their unfinished state. Despite how little I think remakes ever need to be made, 0 and Code Veronica are the two games in the franchise that could really benefit from having their best ideas refined for a new generation to appreciate and here’s my take on how Capcom could pull that off.
