The Untold History of Survival Horror (1994-1995)
Resident Evil and Silent Hill are the de facto survival horror series, and it’s easy to forget the ones who paved the way for these titles. Last time I went over the titles from 1973-1989 that got us here, but aside from Alone in the Dark, it’s easy to skip right through 1993-1995 and go right to the source of the very term survival horror itself in Resident Evil. But there’s too many cool things in that time period that tried to iterate on what Alone in the Dark did in 1992 but without trying to be Resident Evil clones, and that’s what brings us to the three titles Dr. Hauzer, Ecstatica, and Bioforge: three underrated, often unknown titles that rarely get their due. But that changes now!
